Hot! Dial-A-Ride Scheme Closure Hurts Pensioners But Middlewich Taxi Driver Comes To The Rescue

Three elderly women were worried that the folding of a Dial-A-Ride Scheme would leave them isolated. Margaret Dean, Nelly Crumplin and Ethel Wareham were reliant on a weekly service to help them get out and about but when that closed down, they feared the worst. The trio had enjoyed the activities provided by their Bembridge Court lunch and bingo club membership but once the Dial-A-Ride service stopped, they had no choice but to cancel their membership.

Pam Farrell, Bembridge Court scheme manager, was determined to ensure that the women did not miss out on a day that was the highlight of their week. As a result, she got in contact with Rick Bridle, owner of Rick’s Taxis of Middlewich, and struck a deal which sees the three women collected, brought to Bembridge Court and returned home safely. Bridle modestly declared that he was only doing the right thing and also noted that he used to play with the children of the pensioners when he was growing up. Although this familiarity certainly helped the cause, it is simply a case of Bridle helping his local community.

The Dial-A-Ride Service had been conducted by East Cheshire Community Transport but they had to cease trading in the middle of May 2012. This is because the local council cut the charity’s funding by almost £4,500. Margaret Dean spoke of her shock upon hearing the news and stated that without her weekly Wednesday outing, she wouldn’t venture out at all.

Pam was delighted with the assistance of the taxi firm and said that it would have been a terrible shame if the women had to miss out on something they enjoy because of budget cuts. Now that they are members of the Bembridge Court club once again, they can enjoy some independence. Pam continued by saying that a change of scenery and having someone to talk to makes all the difference.

When the trio were using the Dial-A-Ride scheme, they used to pay £5 each for a return trip but Rick only charges £3. Ethel Wareham is believed to be one of the oldest Middlewich residents at 104 years old and she spoke of her delight. According to Ethel, the service provides by Rick is first class and he helps them in and out of the minivan. She concluded by stating that all the women really enjoy their day out.
