Hot! Romford Taxi Driver Jailed For Rape Of Passenger

Edward Chapman, a taxi driver from Romford, was jailed for seven years at Wood Green Crown Court for raping a female passenger. Chapman will also be permanently placed on the sex offender’s register. The incident happened in Finchley on 12 August last year.

The victim is a woman in her thirties and she hailed a black cab in the early hours of the morning in Shoreditch. She asked Chapman to take her home because she was feeling unwell and Chapman initially complied. However, once they reached the destination, Chapman raped the woman in his taxi.

The victim told her friends and family what happened and the police began searching CCTV footage. Soon enough, they identified the cab that had picked her up. Chapman was arrested three days after the incident and charged with rape later on.

DS Steve Grainger praised the victim and her family for their bravery and support to the police during the investigation. Grainger, who is a member of the Barnet Sapphire Unit which investigates sex crimes, also stated that Chapman was a ruthless individual who used his position of trust as a taxi driver to take advantage of the unfortunate woman. He concluded by saying that other victims need to be brave so that people like Chapman can be caught and punished.

Judge Browne QC oversaw the case and sentenced Chapman to seven years in jail on 3 April. He told Chapman that he had disgraced the good name of black cab drivers in London who are renowned for being honest and reliable drivers. The judge pointed out several aggravating features of his crime and was appalled by Chapman’s conduct. Judge Browne stated that the driver was responsible for a gross breach of trust and took advantage of a stranger. He concluded by saying that the victim was still suffering from the ordeal but praised her for showing tremendous courage, calmness and dignity in her quest for justice which had been achieved.
